The late Japanese make-up artist Shu Uemura
(1928-2007) has been associated with elevating
eyelashes to extraordinary lengths, but it was
the American movie director D. W. Griffith who
invented false eyelashes in 1916.
During the filming of his movie Intolerance,
Griffith thought the eyelashes of his leading
star Seena Owen lacked length and thickness.
So he attached fake strands to Seena’s
eyes and — voila! — the world’s
first fake eyelashes were born!
